The Carolina Cobras kick off their fourth
season in the Arena Football League on Friday, January 31, when they face
the Tampa Bay Storm at the Ice Palace in Tampa. After three seasons in
Raleigh, the Cobras are moving to Charlotte for the 2003 season. They will
make their Queen City debut on Friday, February 14, against the Detroit Fury
at 7:30 p.m. in the Charlotte Coliseum.
As a member of the AFL's Southern Division of
the National Conference, the Cobras will play eight home games at the
Charlotte Coliseum and eight away games during the 2003 regular season. The
AFL playoffs will begin on May 25 and Arena Bowl XVII is scheduled for
Sunday, June 22.
"We're really looking forward to kicking off
our first season here in Charlotte," said Cobras General Manager Darrell
Harbin. "It's an exciting time for our league with NBC coming on board. It
will be great for our fans."
Carolina's schedule features home-and-home
matchups with Southern Division opponents Georgia, Orlando and Tampa Bay, a
Week 9 road trip to San Jose to face the defending league champions and NBC
home telecasts against New Jersey (Week 6) and Chicago (Week 14).
The 2003 season marks the first year in which
Arena Football League games will be televised by NBC. Through its agreement
with the AFL, NBC will televise more than 70 AFL games in 2003 on a regional
basis, which would be the second-most games on network television of any
sports league behind only the NFL.
